Die Lutherstadt Wittenberg
a. d. Elbe, von flämischen Siedlern gegr., die Markgraf Albrecht d. Bär der Askanier, ins Land gerufen hatte, 1180 erstm. urkdl. erwähnt, erhielt 1293 Stadtrechte. Als herzogl. und kurfürstl. Residenz bis 1422 und erneut ab 1486 unter Kurfürst Friedr. d. Weisen (1486 - 1525 ) der 1502 die Universität gründete, an der ab 1508 Martin Luther lehrte, wurde die Stadt Wiege der Reformation und geist. Mittelpunk Deutschlands, 31.10.1517 Veröffentlichung der 95 Thesen. Auch Luthers Gefährten lebten in Wittenberg: Ph. Melanchton (1497 - 1560) und Joh. Bugenhagen (1485 - 1558). Lucas Cranach d. Ä. (1472 - 1553) war hier Hofmaler und Bürgermeister. Nach Luthers Tod 1546 u. d. Schmalkald. Krieg 81546/47) kommt W. a. d. albertin. Linie. Ende als Residenz: ab 1815 preußisch. Seit 1952 im DDR-Bezirk Halle, seit dem 3. Oktober 1990 Teil des Bundeslandes Sachsen-Anhalt.
